Today we were at track to make it ready for tomorrow. Everytime when it's gonna rain. The track is covered with plastics. After the rain plastics has to be removed to get track dry. And excluded this, everytime it rains, track is needed to rake and push dirt back to the top of the jumps.. Everytime! During winter you have to do this averige once a week.
Ok, I kinda diceded that now is my offseason. I'm trying to concentrate to something else than BMX. I'm dying to get all tired for riding, or even running. It would be lovely to go to run. Couple more days without training! Tomorrow is gonna be tuff. Everyone else get to practice on track.. and I'm supposed to not ride.
In Europe these things are all different. Mainly because tracks are made from different dirt, but also they might pay little more attention for drainage. Here tracks are built almost in any dirt they can find. Like from Bellflower track pops up golf balls, cos it's used to be golf range :D
Days without BMX has been challenging. Today I had some baseball.. just wondering what I'm gonna make up for tomorrow :/
As long as I remember, I have wanted to have American Xmas. My family in Finland is already full up to head for that. Every year I ask; could we this year open the presents at morning. The idea of sun shine coming thru the curtains and wake you up, you feel little bit angry.. but suddenly you remember it's xmas. Presents are under the tree! Wuhuu, new railway :) okey, the last one was little too much. Anyway, it sounds way better than all day waiting and wondering that when the santa will come.. In America, you gotto wait present till morning, but also the time difference makes this be pretty much the last place for santa to visit.
My American Xmas has been the most wonderful. In Finland we always eat rise pudding at Xmas morning. This time I had to settle with oat meal. Ice skating tradition turning to surfing, or christmas sauna being xmas jazucci, I have nothing to complane about. I hope I can hold on these new traditions. I even made some caramel apples, but we haven't dare to taste them yet :)
The loss of snow is replaced with xmas lights. Too bad I don't have any photos to post. Pretty amazing houses and streets! I hope everyone had great and relaxing xmas! (I have been able to drop my rest heart rate pretty well, this morning I was back to 45. Five more beats down and I'm back in game)
My friend wrote to me yesterday: "looks you are doing good there in America". To tell you the truth, I believe I can make it look good. In real life everyday is about strugling with practicing too much. My legs have been in pain for an year. My rest heart rate is beating (literally beating) 15 beats to high. Last night I slept 2 hours, cos heart was keeping me awake. It's kind a looks good :)
If your basics are not good enough, overtraining is easy as pie. Right now I have basic endurance perioid on. So my schedule is filled with endurance practices. But I can not skip racing while I'm here and able to ride it too. Then is surfing, snowboarding, riding in skateparks, woups almost forgot those sprints..
Overtraining lasts when you do sports because it's fun. You love it. Not because of the results. Anyway, I wouldn't go back to Finland even for Xmas. Sorry my finnish family, I just feel so good here!!
I tryed to sent this earlier, but blog operator site was down.. There is what I had wrote you:
Okey. It's time to share some secrets of BMX. I wanted to talk about turns. Most people know the theory of high low and low high. Some might even heard questionmatk. But can you show those in race.
I feel that turns are the best place to pass. You can be the last one going in and the first one coming out. You just need to anticipate, be little rude and have lots of guts! You still need to be able to hold your speed on streights but I wouldn't underestimate the power of turns.
Let's think that you are the first one going to the turn. I recommend you to concentrate only to get out as fast as possible. You can push yourself little out before the turn. But you should not bother to block otherones. That is the exact thing others are waiting for you to do: Second one is right after you, pushing little up, you could force him to brake. The very same moment you do it, he will drop down and you will be watching his back.. Even if the second one don't do it, the third rider will most likely take advantage of situation.
But the second one has all the cards in his hand. The best thing to do is to wait for the moment to drop in. Riding high low means that you go fairly above the first one and when you can you drop down. Going safetly high makes you be safetly far from the podium. If you have more speed than the first one, you could try to go high and push the first one down. I don't really recommend that cos it hardly never works.
Couple practices for turns: Two going in to the turn at the same time. The one who comes from inside has less speed. So he wants to block the otherone. The one coming from out, want's to ride high low. When it becomes too easy take more riders. Elbows out everytime. If you brake it means push ups!
Other practice: Pretty much different from the first. You go to the turn with full speed. After the last jump and before the turn you try to take pedals. Those couple pedals makes huge different when you are fighting about who is going to pull back. The one coming with less speed will brake :) believe me. One more pedal does matter. Here kids are pedaling even on pump track. They don't have enough power. They take one crank pedals over the pumps while pumping. That's crazy :D
I should not write too much at the time.. and there is already some thoughts about turns.
Hi! I was menth to come to write my blog.. But now my battery is empty and I haven't wrote anything here :/
I had planned to open up what I learned at Saturday one week ago. But now I can't do it.. I will post those tomorrow! Last weekend I was snowboarding. So basic surfing sunday pretty much freezed :) It's incrediable that just one hour away is a place to snowboard! And the season it about as long as snowboarding season in Finland. Snowboarding was wonderful! I had forgot how much I like it. And if everything works out well, I will have a job here for next winter :)
But catch you up tomorrow! With BMX news.. buyMutta huomiseen! Silloin on BMX uutisien vuoro.. heippa!
Rain has kept me off the track. Well, yesterday it was supposed to rain, but I didn't believe it so I head to the track. On the way track posted that they will be closed. No worries we thought.. and drove to next sky high. Sky high, trampoline world, is a place what is full of trampolines. Also the walls are tramplolines! And there is area where you can jump to foampit and dodgeball area made on trampolines :) Do I need to mention that I had fun.. :)
Today forecast said there is gonna be huge storm. Day was beautiful and clear. But tracks were closed. Thursday, so Vans skatepark is having BMX time. There you go! No one wanted to join me.. :( but it's ok, I can go by myself. I was pretty much tourist over there. It was scary.. and nice at the same time. Mostly I ride that half pipe. Lowest place to drop in was from 5 feet. I have done that, but somehow I didn't get myself to try it. I have became such a loser lately. I have ride too much with clips I guess! I will go there again, that's for sure :) and next time I will drop in! That's a promise!!
Unbelievable day! Just amazing!! At morning I headed to Whittier Narrows BMX track to have 1 on 1 practices! Awssome 3 hour practice, I learned so much. For first hour we concentrated to turns. Coach didn't leave me space in turns. I just had to push my elbows out and pedal. If I break that meant push ups. I can tell you that first 10 turns I was screaming. It was awful! Then it started to be fun. Now I love turns!! :)
After this we concentrated on track speed. For me it turn out to be super important. That is funny how coaches can always find the way make you understand what they want to tell you. Like the comment of the day: "you have to concentrate only to the next jump, what is past is past. Like if your last boyfriend was bad, you got to forget it, otherwise you will never find a good boyfriend". LOL I think I will remember that BMX lesson, rest of my life!
Too much happened in one day. I can not tell you everything at the same time! After practices I was meant to go race to Bellflower. I was only 2 hours late.. so no racing. But I made it right at the time to see finals.
And after all this, parties were only starting.. To Hollywood!! It was time for 4130 subway series. There was about 200 BMWers. Hitting thru Hollywood and Beverly Hills to LA downtown. Just awesome.. Traffic stops for us.. cars are honking. People taking photos when we pass them.. Well at stop points you better go get some air little further, or you will end all stoned :D
For those who wants to join the ride. It is always second Saturday of the month. Starting behind El Captain Theater. You better get there around 7 p.m. Remember set lights to your bike. It doesn't cost to join the ride.. other question you probably find answer from http://4130subwayseries.com/
I'm glad to tell you that I'm back on track again. Not fully healthy yet, but as long as I don't have to breath everything works fine :D
All thoughts about maximizing my progress in BMX got me to push true 2hours gate practice today. It's pretty long time, did I learn something? Hips to bars, no maybe shoulders first, or throw your hips with same ankle as starting hill goes. Damn, did I learn anything After all the first gate I did was the best. What happened then? I started to try. I tryed to do something. I tryed too hard. There is so many small things in gates that you can focus on. If you try to fix them all you end up standing on gate and have no idea what is happening.
At the moment the biggest thing for me is starting to believe myself. I got believe I can do it. I got believe I'm able to do it. There is lot to learn but before I learn to believe myself there is no need to try anything else.
Here is Kyle Bennet's words about the very same subject
Okey, no need to wonder that did I go there to ride with my carbon bike :D I did not ride :/ Guess I was too scared.. I was only shopping and this park is inside an awesome shopping center.
Speaking the truth I have been thinking of starting practice some freestyle BMX too. Just because that would make me better in race, improve my skills with bike. I had a plan to go here last sunday, but jittery knees must made me forget those plans. Next bike sesh is thursday, we'll see if I get myself here or not. But for all other racers, I recommend to go to ride skateparksllille sunnuntaina, mutta ehkä polvet tärisi niin että unohdin koko jutun. Seuraava pyörävuoro on torstaina. Saa nähdä uskallanko :) Kehotan kaikille vähintään talvisin siirtymään skeittihalleihin!!
